Why is the Draft Code for Good Governance in Sports 2017 in a limbo? Why has the Ministry been perceived as reluctant to usher it in?
I was privileged to participate in The Sports Law and Policy Network Panel Discussion today. My colleague Neeru Bhatia, Deputy Chief of Bureau, The Week, Shaun Star, Associate Professor, Jindal Global Law School & Director, Centre for Sports Law, Business and Governance, OP Jindal Global University were the other panelists. Vidushpath Singhania, leading sports lawyer, Managing Partner, Krida Legal, was the moderator. The subject was Draft National Code for Good Governance in Sports, 2017: Challenges to Implementation & Discussion on Best Practices from Australia.

- 2015 July CK Mahajan Panel formed to revise National Sports Code.It is given three months to submit revised Code.Panel doesn’t submit a report.
- 2017 January 5 Injeti Srinivas Panel formed
- 2017 February 2 Delhi High Court orders Committee not to publish report
- 2017 March 22 High Court orders Government to present document in a sealed cover.
- 2017 July 19 Draft submitted to Government (which would have presented it to Delhi HC in a sealed cover)
- 2018 July Government plans to ask Court to let it take document for stakeholder review
- 2019 May Ministry seeks six months to review Draft
- 2018 May 11 Rahul Mehra inspects files
- 2018 Nov 16 Court allows Ministry to take back Draft Code , hitherto placed in a sealed envelope (as per HC order of March 22, 2017)
